1 week down...

It's one week into my fast and I'm feeling surprisingly positive about it. By now I thought I'd be a pathetic mess, having cartoon-like hallucinations that people resembled various forbidden foods, yet there's barely a grumble in my tummy. They say that the first 3 days of fasting are the hardest, if this is the case then the next 2 weeks should be a breeze! Rather than feeling hungry and weak as I expected, I feel healthier and a bit chirpier, I even have more than enough energy to run around at my new job which I started around the same time as my fast. In fact, working over the lunchtime period helps distract me from the occasional hunger pangs that I tend to feel at about 2ish then again at around 6.
Each day my routine has been fairly similar; I'll have a banana for breakfast which lasts me through until I get home around 5 when I'll have a snack of either some more fruit or some raw vegetables (carrots, red pepper etc) then at about 6 I will have my dinner. This week my main meals have consisted of: baked potato with salsa and olives, homemade pea and sage soup, homemade butternut squash soup and grilled vegetables. I spent my day off work this week cooking up 2 surprisingly tasty vegetable-only soups which are so nice in fact, that my dad, the 'it's not a meal unless there's some meat on the plate' sort of guy, asked me to make some for him too. Now there's a compliment!
I may technically be classed as an adult (ha!) but it is quite upsetting that I don't get the delight of advent calender chocolate each day. I have made a deal with my parents that I get to open the advent calendar each day and they have the chocolate until the end of my fast, after that they're definitely not allowed near it!
So, 1 week down, 2 to go and I'm feeling surprisingly positive about it. Don't forget though that my fast is pointless without donations so please visit justgiving.com/Jess-Marshall1 to donate towards my volunteer trip to India, I will hopefully have more information on my trip soon so I'll keep you updated!

Volunteer placement to India

On January 18th 2013 I will be travelling to Delhi, India as a volunteer on a 3 month long International Citizen Service programme with VSO. In Delhi I will be living with a local family with another volunteer from India. I will be completely immersed in the local culture and will be acting as part of the community. I will be volunteering during the week on projects focussing on environment, active citizenship, life skills and education within the community.
International Citizen Service (ICS) is a volunteer programme funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and is run by several different charity organisations, including VSO (who I will be working with). To find out more about the ICS programme visit www.dfid.gov.uk/ics
As part of my commitment to the ICS programme, I need to do some fundraising for VSO. My fundraising target is £800 which I need to raise before I leave for my trip in January. As part of this fundraising effort I will be doing a sponsored fast. inspired by the fasting of Hindus as the people of Delhi are predominantly Hindu. From the 1st December I will be taking part in a 21 day liquid fast, where I will consume only liquids and vegetables. I will be keeping a diary via this blog, which will regularly be updated with my progress throughout my fast. If you would like to sponsor me during the run-up t my departure or sponsor certain days of my trip, please visit www.justgiving.com/Jess-Marshall1 any amount donated will be greatly appreciated.
Please subscribe to keep up to date on my progress and possibly find yourself craving a liquidised dinner (or not), I'll keep you posted!
